In the midst of the horror of the Thirty Years’ War in 1633, the dreaded plague swept across Europe. High in the Bavarian Alps, the citizens of Oberammergau attempted to seal themselves off from the outside world. After 84 residents died within 3 weeks, in desperation, the town council made a solemn vow that if God would stop the plague, out of gratitude, they would present a play depicting the life and suffering of Christ for the duration of their existence. Miraculously, the plague took no more lives in the town. True to their word, the villagers performed their first play in 1634 and have continued to do so to this day. Anyone involved in the performance must have either been born in Oberammergau or lived there for at least 20 years. A massive undertaking, the Passion Play is produced only every 10 years, and you will be one of the lucky few who will ever have the opportunity to experience this rare and revered production firsthand! You will also travel to some of the oldest and most beautiful cathedrals, castles and more all throughout Germany. Choose from a range of dates for your trip: May 16 – October 14, 2020.
